Born July 8, 1948, in Yerevan.
In 1971 graduated from Yerevan State University, majored in philology.
In 1970-1971, he worked at Yerevan Silk Plant as a metalworker; in 1972-1991, he worked in the sphere of education, at school #30, as a teacher, in school #153, as deputy principal, in schools ##3 and 185, as a principal.
In 1991-1996, he was deputy chairman of Mashtots executive committee, then, first deputy.
In 1995-1999, he was elected to the NA from Precinct #32, a member of standing parliamentary commission on science, education, culture and youth affairs. A member of "Hanrapetutun" parliamentary faction, then, "Yerkrapah" faction.
On May 30, 1999, he was elected to the NA from the proportional party ticket of "Unity" Alliance. Deputy chairman of standing parliamentary commission on science, education, culture and youth affairs, a member of "Unity" Alliance, then, leader.
On May 25, 2003, he was elected from the proportional party ticket of the RPA. He is the leader of "Hanrapetutun" parliamentary faction.
Since 16 September 1994, has been a member of the Republican Party of Armenia.
On 2 December 1995 (2-nd congress of RPA), on 20 December 1997(4-th congress of RPA), on 30 January 1999(5-th congress of RPA), on 9 June 2001(6-th congress of RPA), on 12 July 2003 (8-th congress of RPA), on 17 December 2005 (9-th congress of RPA) was elected a member of RPA board.
