Official Opening of the Four-Day National Model UN Conference is Held in the RA National Assembly

 On November 6 the official opening of the Four-Day National Model UN Conference in the RA National Assembly took place in the Session Hall of the RA National Assembly, where delegates from twenty-eight countries (from eight higher educational institutions and eight schools) took part. The conference was organized at the initiative of the UN Armenia Office Department of Public Information jointly with the American University of Armenia. It is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and Sustainable Development Goals.

The President of the RA National Assembly delivered a speech in the opening of the conference and welcoming the participants, congratulated them on the occasion of the opening of the National Model UN Conference in Armenia. Galust Sahakyan in his speech noted that the cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the UN began in 1992, when the UN Office opened in Yerevan. In the NA President’s word, through decades the UN implemented numerous programmes in our country, which promoted the boosting of democracy, sustainable development and the protection of human rights.

Galust Sahakyan noted: “The year 2015 gave an unprecedented opportunity to the countries of the world for consolidating and making historical decisions, which would be aimed at the global process of the elimination of poverty, the development of the people’s welfare, the preservation of environment and the solution of the problem of climate changes. This year the countries have an opportunity to pass a new agenda for sustainable development and reach the adoption of the world agreement on climate change.”

Addressing the UN young delegates, the President of the National Assembly noted that as future specialists, they, expanding their world outlook, being in touch with the events in the world and presenting their own viewpoints, could make contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The President wished the participants successes in their education and in all initiatives.

Afterwards the UN Resident Coordinator for Armenia Bradley Busetto delivered a welcoming speech and conveyed the UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon’s message.

After the official opening of the conference the UN young delegates took their seats and announced the beginning of the Plenary Session.
